Chu-Yuan Lee is one of the few internationally renowned architects from Taiwan. He joined the Pei Partnership Architects after graduating from Princeton University in the US and assisted I.M. Pei in the design of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Pavilion in the Osaka World Expo in 1970. He returned to Taiwan only in 1980, where his first creation in the country was the Breeze Center (then known as Asiaworld Building), an investment project by Filipino businessman Tan Yu, who was once amongst the top 10 Forbes List of World Billionaires. Lee shot to fame as a result of this project.

Eminent buildings designed by Lee include Taipei 101, Kaohsiung 85 Sky Tower and the Chung Tai Chan Monastery. The Taiwan Pavilion in the Shanghai World Expo, with its theme of “Mountain, Water, & Lantern of the Heart”, embodied Taiwan’s love for the world through the design of a sky lantern that is released to pray for peace.
